In recent news, Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH has issued a recall for its Zwiebelmettwurst due to the presence of toxin-producing Escherichia coli (EHEC) bacteria. The affected product, packaged in 500-gram units, was produced on 11.08.2025 and carries a best before date of 27.08.2025.

The batch number of the affected Schleizer Zwiebelmettwurst is 133 (marked on the closure clip). The affected product was distributed across several German states, including Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Bayern, Hessen, Niedersachsen, Sachsen, and Thüringen.

EHEC bacteria can cause severe illnesses in humans, including severe diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), potentially leading to kidney failure. People at a higher risk of severe illness from EHEC include children, those with pre-existing conditions, and the elderly.

This recall comes amidst a recent increase in EHEC infections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with children being particularly affected. In 2011, a large EHEC outbreak occurred in Germany, resulting in approximately 3,800 cases and over 50 deaths. Contaminated sprouts from Egyptian broccoli seeds were believed to be the likely cause of the 2011 EHEC outbreak.

Customers are strongly discouraged from consuming the Schleizer Zwiebelmettwurst and are advised to return the product to the store for a full refund. For more information, customers can contact Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH, located at Industriestraße 2, 07907 Schleiz.

It is crucial for consumers to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure food safety. The average time from consuming a contaminated food to the onset of illness due to EHEC is three to four days. If you experience any symptoms related to EHEC infection, seek medical attention immediately.
