Recall initiated by Stellantis for 219,577 Ram ProMaster and Dodge Journey automobiles
Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has announced a recall of 219,577 vehicles across the US due to a defect in the rear-view camera system. The recall affects various models, including the Ram ProMaster and Dodge Journey, from 2019 to 2021 and 2018 to 2020, respectively.
The safety concern arises from a malfunctioning rear-view camera that may display a blank, black, blue, or inverted image, potentially increasing the risk of a crash if the driver fails to notice the faulty screen and does not ensure safe reversing conditions.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) US has committed to addressing the issue by replacing the defective rear-view cameras free of charge. This recall is separate from a previous action by Stellantis last year, which involved more than 300,000 Ram heavy-duty pickup trucks due to a faulty hydraulic control unit.
In May 2024, FCA US submitted a response and engaged in discussions with the NHTSA. Further investigations by FCA US's Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) team, conducted between February and May 2025, involved reviewing the change history of related components and consulting with the supplier.
The auto regulator began investigating the loss of rear-view camera functionality in Dodge Journey models from 2018 to 2020 in February last year. The TSRC organisation officially opened an investigation in May 2025, which led to the recognition of a vehicle build issue causing the loss of rear-view camera image, potentially violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111.
On 19 August 2025, FCA US concluded that all affected vehicles might not comply with FMVSS No. 571.111 S6.2.6. Dealers will be notified of the recall on or about 3 September.
Stellantis has recently outlined the significant impact of US tariffs on its business, projecting a reduction in earnings of approximately €1.5 billion for the current year, with most of the financial impact expected in the latter half. In response, Stellantis is adjusting its production strategies to mitigate the effects of these tariffs.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has confirmed a 100% chance of the defect being present in the recalled vehicles. There was an uptick in related claims from July 2019, as revealed during the discussions with the NHTSA.
This recall is a reminder for all drivers to prioritise safety and maintain regular checks on their vehicles' systems. If you own one of the affected models, you should receive a notification from your dealer on or about 3 September. Until then, we advise exercising caution when reversing and ensuring safe conditions before manoeuvring.
