Contenders for the top spot in male finger wrestling emerging - Realms of Male Dominance Coming to an End?
In the quaint town of Mittenwald, Upper Bavaria, the 70th Bavarian Finger Wrestling Championship is underway, drawing a lively crowd of spectators and participants dressed in traditional attire. Amidst the brass music and the aroma of sausages and beer, a debate has arisen over the exclusion of women from the competition.
Linda, a football player and companion to one of the competitors, voiced her disapproval, finding the exclusion discriminatory. She disagrees with the excuse of maltreated fingers as a reason for the exclusion, arguing that many women participate in contact sports without any issues.
The competition, an unusual spectacle, involves men trying to pull each other across a table using only one finger. The Sturm family, hailing from Issing in the Landsberg am Lech district, has made a significant impact, with Andreas Sturm winning the lightweight class and Gerhard Sturm taking the senior class over 60.
The championship is divided into nine classes, including lightweight, middleweight, heavyweight, and various age groups. However, women are not allowed to compete, a decision that has been rooted in historical reasons and a lack of interest, according to Thomas Post, the first chairman of the Bavarian Finger Wrestling state association.
Monika Wagner, the current chairwoman, and Marlene Schlecht, the first woman to serve as chairperson of a regional association in Bayerischer Fingerkampf, have not been able to change the statutes to include women. The interest of women in participating, as stated by Thomas Post, is not great.
Despite the controversy, the championship continues, with the Sturm family's three-year-old son and grandson, Hannes, cheering on his father and grandfather. The question of women's participation in the Bavarian Finger Wrestling Championships remains unresolved, sparking discussions about equality and tradition.
