"Rare occurrences of underperformance with the heat pump"
In a groundbreaking study published in the prestigious journal "Cell Reports Sustainability", a research group from Aachen has compared the environmental impacts of air-water heat pumps and gas boilers over their entire life cycles. The first author of the study is Christian Vering from RWTH Aachen.
The study reveals that heat pumps can save between 48 and 91 percent of greenhouse gases compared to gas heaters. Even under unfavorable conditions, a reduction of about 50% is achievable, according to a life cycle analysis by RWTH Aachen. This potential for greenhouse gas emission savings makes heat pumps an attractive alternative to gas heaters.
Interestingly, this year, heat pumps with 139,000 units have become the top seller among newly sold heating systems in Germany, marking the first time the heat pump has taken the lead in the country's heating market. This shift is particularly noteworthy considering that approximately 5.6 million gas heaters are currently installed in residential buildings in Germany, while around 1.7 million heat pumps are already in use.
Regarding the access to FAZ+ articles, while the online platform does not provide information about cancellation, users can reportedly cancel their online subscription with a single click. However, further details about this process were not provided in the available information.
This research underscores the growing importance of renewable and energy-efficient heating solutions in the face of climate change. As more homes in Germany transition to heat pumps, the country is poised to make significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable energy use.
