Local authorities - Ramelow expresses worry over locations lacking a mayoral contender.

As the State Statistical Office reports, there are plans to elect 1025 district and local mayors in the upcoming local elections this Sunday. However, 91 of these municipalities have no candidates. In these areas, voters can nominate their own representatives on the blank ballot papers. This phenomenon has been witnessed in previous local elections as well. Generally, the roles of district and local mayors are voluntary in nature, and lately there has been a rise in attacks against politicians and campaigners in the state of Thuringia.

Ramelow stressed the need to revive democracy by ensuring better acknowledgement and protection for the elected officials.
