In an unfortunate incident during the EuroBasket 2025 game between Germany and Lithuania in Tampere, German national team captain Dennis Schröder reported being subjected to racist heckling from the stands. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has since taken action, banning an identified Lithuanian fan from attending any remaining EuroBasket 2025 games.

According to Schröder, the racist remarks were made during the game, and he also reported the incident to the German Basketball Federation (DBB), who provided relevant footage and information to the authorities. The arena's security identified the individual using video footage, and two individuals were ejected from the arena during halftime.

FIBA has contacted the Lithuanian delegation regarding the incident and plans to inform them about the situation and support efforts to prevent similar incidents in future games. However, it is unclear if any disciplinary action will be taken against the Lithuanian fans involved.

Schröder, who has been vocal about his stance against racism, said he cannot accept such behaviour and it should not be part of the world. He added that he does not tolerate or respect racism, and it does not belong in sports.

In a statement, FIBA announced the ban, stating that it was issued in response to the racism incident involving Schröder. However, the identity of the individual who was previously banned has not yet been released.

The Lithuanian delegation has not yet publicly commented on the incident. The German coaching staff alerted arena security about monkey noises made by some Lithuanian fans during halftime.

Schröder's team went on to win the game, but the incident cast a dark shadow over the competition. FIBA has emphasised its commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive environment in basketball and has urged fans to respect all players, regardless of their race or nationality.
