QuestBet fined $80K for failing to protect a distressed gambler
Online bookmaker QuestBet has been fined AUD 80,000 for failing to protect a vulnerable customer. The penalty follows an investigation by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC), which found the company allowed excessive gambling despite clear signs of distress. Between April and June 2023, the customer repeatedly contacted QuestBet, requesting extra credits and bonus bets while reporting heavy losses. The VGCCC discovered that QuestBet granted the customer bonus bets five times, even after learning about their mounting losses. Over two months, the individual lost around AUD 15,000—a figure later confirmed by QuestBet's CEO, Suzy Neilan. During this period, the customer reached out to the company more than 20 times, with six of those contacts explicitly mentioning financial harm and gambling-related distress.
The investigation concluded that QuestBet lacked proper systems to identify and assist at-risk customers. Instead of intervening, the bookmaker permitted the distressed gambler to continue betting, worsening their financial situation. This case mirrors recent enforcement actions by the VGCCC, which fined two other online bookmakers—TAB Australia in 2024 and Sportsbet in 2025—for similar failures in player protection. In response, the VGCCC reminded consumers to report any breaches of gambling regulations. The commission also encouraged those struggling with gambling to seek support services.
QuestBet's fine highlights ongoing concerns about responsible gambling practices in Australia. The company's failure to act on clear warning signs resulted in significant losses for the customer. The VGCCC's decision reinforces the need for stricter compliance with player protection rules across the industry.
