Queer community members invited to join a queer-feminist book club gathering on June 18th in Saarbrücken for a discussion exchange
The next session of Queergelesen, a joint project between the Women's Gender Library Saar and the AK Queer of the University of the Saarland, will take place on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 7:30 PM. This time, the focus will be on the acclaimed debut novella "Desoriental" by Négar Djavadi.
"Desoriental" is a dense literary work that has received numerous awards and is considered a notable contribution to contemporary French literature. The novel offers a deep exploration of themes such as cultural uprooting, political exile, family history, and queer identity.
The protagonist of the novel is Kimia Sadr, through whose eyes these themes are explored. "Desoriental" is a partly autobiographical work that tells the story of an Iranian family in exile.
Queergelesen aims to discuss literature and films that focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and other queer perspectives. The goal is to reflect societal expectations and question stereotypical thought patterns. The event will be held at the Women's Gender Library in Großherzog-Friedrich-Straße 111, Saarbrücken.
Participation in Queergelesen is flexible and optional, meaning there's no requirement to read the book beforehand. For more information about the book club and participation, including online access, please contact the Women's Gender Library Saar directly.
The discussion of "Desoriental" promises a multifaceted exchange about identity, origin, and queer life in various cultural contexts. The organizers of Queergelesen believe that it's important for queer people to see themselves represented in media, and that engaging with different life realities helps heterosexual people develop more empathy and reduce discrimination.
We look forward to seeing you at the next Queergelesen session!
