Queensland delays Star Gold Coast casino licence suspension by a year
The Queensland Government has delayed the suspension of The Star Gold Coast's casino licence by another year. This decision follows ongoing efforts by the casino operator to address regulatory concerns under independent oversight. The deferral allows more time for reforms to take effect before any potential penalties are enforced. The licence suspension was originally set for 90 days starting in May 2024. Instead, the government has granted a 12-month extension, pushing the decision to at least 2025. Acting Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie confirmed that authorities will keep a close watch on The Star's progress during this period.
The Star Entertainment Group has been working through a remediation programme since facing disciplinary action and a A$100 million fine. CEO Steve McCann acknowledged the improvements made so far and pledged to continue the reforms. Independent special manager Nick Weeks, who has overseen operations at The Star Sydney Casino, will now extend his role to Queensland until at least 31 March 2026. Weeks noted that while progress has been made, financial challenges have slowed some reforms. His continued involvement aims to ensure the casino meets regulatory standards before any suspension is reconsidered.
The deferral gives The Star Gold Coast another year to complete its remediation plan. Authorities will monitor compliance closely, with Nick Weeks remaining in charge of oversight. The casino's licence status will depend on whether the required improvements are fully implemented by the new deadline.
