Putin and Xi enjoy a strong bond.

Authoritarian ruler conveys a precise message.

Two authoritarian leaders connect. - Putin and Xi enjoy a strong bond.

Last Thursday, Russian leader Vladimir Putin (71) parted ways with Chinese President Xi Jinping (70) during his visit to China. Initially, the two leaders shook hands in a rather uneventful manner.

However, Xi took it a step further by extending his arms for a hug towards Putin - even embracing him twice! This gesture was intended as a show to the West, implying that China and Russia are united against their common enemy.

The reality is that Putin is practically secluded, as the war in Ukraine and the ongoing Western sanctions have left him heavily reliant on his major neighbor, China.

Both countries have decided to strengthen their ties during the two-day trip taking place. Additionally, Putin mentioned his plan to construct a gas pipeline that would pass through Mongolia and reach China.

Following his stay in Beijing, Putin traveled to the city of Harbin (Heilongjiang province) in northern China, which borders Russia. In early 1900s, many Russians immigrated to Harbin, and their influence can still be seen today.

As part of his visit, Putin attended a local Orthodox church. Despite his soldiers launching rockets at Ukrainian civilians, the Russian leader now appeared as an advocate for peace.

Accompanied by Xi, Putin condemned any further escalation of the Ukraine conflict and expressed his interest in a "political resolution."

It's ironic since, for several days now, Putin's troops have significantly increased pressure on Ukrainian defenders, attempting to advance further in the Kharkiv region.
