A group of 24 ninth and tenth-grade students from Hilda-Gymnasium in Pforzheim, Germany, recently embarked on an enriching cultural exchange journey to the Basque Country in Spain. The visit, which took place in Gernika, the partner town of Pforzheim, was part of an effort to revive and strengthen student exchanges after the pandemic.

The students were accompanied by their teachers, Grete Hippelein and Heike Wirth, who also teach at the school called "Colegio Internacional" in Spain. During their week-long stay, the students tested their language skills, immersed themselves in Basque culture, and experienced the hospitality of the locals.

The students visited the Basque partner school, Seber Altube Ikastola, where they engaged in various activities designed to foster international understanding and European unity. In San Sebastian, a cultural hub of the Basque Country, they explored the city's rich history and vibrant culture.

Excursions also included a day trip to Bilbao, once an industrial city and now a vibrant place with the Guggenheim Museum. The students also had the opportunity to hike in a nearby bird sanctuary and visit the Basque oak, a symbol of Basque independence.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the city of Gernika, a symbol of Basque democracy. Teacher Grete Hippelein expressed her delight with the successful encounter, stating that it underscored the strong desire of those at Hilda-Gymnasium to revive and strengthen student exchanges.

The students shared their positive experiences, with Kaya expressing her enthusiasm for her exchange experience, stating she could have stayed in Spain for five weeks instead of five days. Mavie shared her relief and positive experience, stating her fears about her host family were unfounded, and they treated her like their own child.

The visit to the Basque Country was a valuable learning experience for the students, providing them with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture and make lasting memories. The success of this exchange visit serves as a testament to the power of cultural exchange in fostering understanding, friendship, and unity between nations.
