Fuel Prices Decrease Across the Board in South Africa

Good news for South African consumers as fuel prices have taken a downward turn. Effective from 00h01 on Wednesday, 3 September 2025, the prices of petrol, diesel, illuminating paraffin, and LPG have all decreased.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) confirmed the price drops, with the decrease applying to both 93 ULP & LRP and 95 ULP & LRP, amounting to 4.00 c/litre for each. The wholesale price of Illuminating Paraffin has decreased by 37.00 c/litre, while the SMNRP price has dropped by 49.00 c/litre. The Maximum Retail Price of LPG has decreased by 132.00 c/kg.

The decrease in the price of diesel was also noted, although the specific amount was not provided. However, Lebo Ramolahlohane, National Vice Chairperson of the South African Petroleum Retailers Association (SAPRA) and a member of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), stated that the sharp drop in diesel prices is especially positive for the transport, agriculture, and logistics sectors.

Ramolahlohane believes the decrease will bring real relief to households and businesses, especially considering the rising prices for essentials such as meat and vegetables that have been weighing heavily on consumers. He further stated that the adjustment is well-timed.

However, analysts caution that the relief from the fuel price decrease may be temporary. Global geopolitical risks and volatile international markets remain significant factors that could reverse the current downward trend in fuel prices.

July's inflation reached 3.5%, the highest level in ten months, with food costs being the main driver. The decrease in fuel prices is expected to help ease the burden on consumers, but it remains to be seen how long this relief will last.

The current Minister of Electricity and Energy in the South African government, responsible for issues including fuel price changes, is Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. Ramolahlohane's optimism is shared by the Minister, who expressed hope that the decrease in fuel prices will help stimulate economic growth and alleviate the burden on consumers.

In conclusion, the decrease in fuel prices is a welcome development for South African consumers and businesses. While the relief is expected to be temporary, it is hoped that it will help ease the burden of rising costs and stimulate economic growth.
