Expanding digital tools are progressively stripping parents of control, as per psychoanalyst Nelia Schmid Koenig. The significance of trust becomes increasingly crucial in the digital era.

In a world where digital devices have become an integral part of daily life, especially for adolescents, psychoanalyst Nelia Schmid König offers valuable insights into the impact of social media and digital technologies on young individuals.

Schmid König, author of the book "Analog Parents - Digital Children," compares social media to slot machines, implying an addictive quality. This comparison serves as a reminder of the potential for digital platforms to consume significant amounts of time and attention, particularly among adolescents.

One of the challenges faced by today's youth is the lack of real social contacts and the subsequent loss of social skills. Adolescents may find themselves experiencing loneliness due to their reliance on digital interactions, which can sometimes be superficial and lack the depth of face-to-face conversations.

Bans on mobile phones in school may not be an effective solution, according to Schmid König. Instead, she encourages parents to engage in open and honest conversations with their children about the appropriate use of digital devices.

Another issue that arises is the perceived lack of interest from parents in digital matters. As a result, adolescents may not confide in their parents about digital issues, which can lead to potential problems going unaddressed.

Schmid König has noticed a more mindful approach to digital possibilities among reflective couples in their thirties. However, she also warns that some parents are too laissez-faire in their parenting and underestimate the influence of digital media on their children.

The EU is urged to establish a new school subject on media literacy to equip young people with the skills necessary to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. Building a stable bond with a child in the first years of life is the best protection against losing influence as they grow older.

In therapies with children and adolescents, the quality of life of the parents is also considered. Schmid König encourages parents to let their children show them where they are digitally, allowing for a better understanding of the digital landscape that shapes their children's lives.

Digital media can influence children's understanding of sexuality, often leading to distorted images of sexuality and self-worth issues. Parents are encouraged to let their children find solutions themselves, trust them, and let them experience what they can achieve on their own.

Schmid König believes digital media has become a strong co-educator, not in the way parents wish it to be. She emphasises the importance of parents doing things that make them happy and are just for them, as a balanced approach to digital parenting is crucial for the well-being of young families. The motto for children's smartphone use should not necessarily be "as late as possible," but rather a focus on teaching them responsible and mindful digital habits.
