Protesting Grandmothers Challenge the Right before the Federal Parliament Elections in Dusseldorf
In the heart of Germany, a group of dedicated individuals, known as Grandmas Against the Right, are making waves as one of the most prominent and largest initiatives for democracy. This grassroots movement, which includes many men in addition to grandmothers, is urging all eligible voters to vote for democratic parties of the center, as the preservation of democracy itself is at stake.
The group's efforts to raise awareness about the importance of democracy have been well-documented, with Christiane May capturing a poignant photograph of them rallying outside a town hall. Their recent demonstration in Düsseldorf on Saturday, 8.2., saw them engaging with passersby, advocating for democracy, the rule of law, cultural diversity, tolerance, respectful coexistence, and responsible environmental management.
The group's concerns are not unfounded. The AfD, a far-right political party, has been making increasingly radical statements, equating refugees fleeing war, hunger, and misery with criminals who should not be allowed into the country. The party has even discussed the "remigration" of people who have been living in Germany for a long time with their families.
This right-wing development in society is not going unnoticed. More parties are jumping on the bandwagon and presenting migration as the supposedly greatest problem in society. However, there is no mention from the CDU and Co. about the current decrease in asylum applications or femicides in Germany, committed by perpetrators of various origins.
The Grandmas Against the Right see the danger that democratic achievements and the foundation of societal coexistence could be jeopardized by new majorities in the Bundestag. In response, they are organizing a block for a large demonstration on February 15th, starting at 12 pm in front of the DGB house on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. Families are welcome at this block, which will be recognizable by their banners.
The AfD has announced a large event on Schadowplatz for the same day, and all people are called upon to protest against it. The goal of the Democracy Demo is to reach Corneliusplatz on February 15th, 2025.

The group also has the support of Grandpas in Solidarity with Grandmas Against the Right, which is backed by the organization "Solidarity Seniors Network." They can be contacted via their official website's contact form or through their email [email protected].
In these trying times, the efforts of Grandmas Against the Right serve as a beacon of hope for those who value democracy and the principles it upholds. Their unwavering commitment to preserving these values is a testament to the power of grassroots activism and the importance of standing up for what is right.
