Protesters Voice Displeasure Over On-going Street Building Project
The A100 city motorway in Berlin saw the opening of its 16th section last Thursday, but the celebration was short-lived as an alliance of several associations and initiatives organized a pedestrian protest at the motorway exit.
The new section, which runs from the Neukölln interchange to the Treptow junction, has been a source of concern for many, with reports of long traffic jams, heavy traffic, and confusing situations around the junction in Berlin-Treptow after its opening.
The protest was organized by the alliance "A100 wegbassen" and the Citizens' Initiative A100 ("Bürger*innenInitiative A100"). Participating in the protest were associations such as Changing Cities, the pedestrian association FUSS, and the ADFC Treptow-Köpenick. Others at the protest demanded "Traffic turnaround now."
One banner at the protest read, "Cities for people, not cars." The gathering included participants who spontaneously blocked one lane at the beginning, causing a temporary disruption to traffic. The police spoke to the event organizers, asking them to influence the participants who blocked the roadway.
Construction work on the adjacent Elsenbrücke, a traffic bottleneck, has also contributed to the already tense traffic situation in that area before the new section went into operation.
Up to 200 people protested against the traffic chaos following the opening of the new section of the A100. The participants subsequently left the roadway, marking the end of the protest. The alliance has vowed to continue their efforts in advocating for a more pedestrian-friendly city infrastructure.
