Prosperous Apple Harvest in Saxony for Apple Companies

In the picturesque town of Dohna, Agriculture Minister Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch officially opened the 2025 apple harvest season at Beck's Fruit Barn. This year's season promises to be a significant improvement over the previous year, with favourable growing conditions and a bountiful bloom.

Beck's Fruit Barn, spanning over 150 hectares, is a diverse fruit-growing operation, cultivating apples, cherries, plums, berries, and peaches. Apples, however, remain the most important crop in Saxony, accounting for about 60% of the fruit-growing area.

The 2024 apple harvest was marred by late frosts, resulting in significantly lower yields. This year, the outlook is much brighter, with an estimated 47,000 tons of apples expected to be harvested - a stark contrast to the 5,460 tons harvested in 2024.

Minister von Breitenbuch acknowledged the challenges faced by fruit growers, including increasing drought periods, falling producer prices despite rising costs, planned minimum wage increases, and fewer available plant protection products. He emphasised the need for new solutions through the interplay of research and politics to address these challenges.

The most popular apple varieties among Saxons continue to be Gala, Elstar, Pinova, and Braeburn. As the Minister toured the orchards, he expressed optimism about the high yields and the promise of a successful 2025 season.

Despite tight budget constraints, the Free State will continue to support fruit growing, recognising its importance to the region's economy and culture. The Minister's visit to Beck's Fruit Barn served as a testament to this commitment.

As the season progresses, visitors can look forward to picking their own fresh, juicy apples at Beck's Fruit Barn, enjoying the fruits of a season filled with promise and hope.
