Prosecutors are once again scrutinizing the leader of the CHP for comments made regarding a prosecutor.
In a series of recent events, the main opposition party in Turkey, the Republican People's Party (CHP), has been actively voicing its concerns over ongoing investigations and alleged obstructions by the authorities.
Deniz Yücel, the CHP spokesperson, issued a statement on the matter, expressing the party's stance. The statement was made in response to the ongoing investigations, particularly those involving the Istanbul Municipality. Yücel referred to the "justified reactions rising from the streets and squares" as a source of fear for the authorities.
During a rally, CHP member Özgür Özel challenged the handling of corruption cases by Istanbul's chief public prosecutor, Akın Gürlek. Özgür Özel alleged that Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney had handed over past tender files from Beyoğlu Municipality to the police. The chief public prosecutor's office in Ankara has since initiated an investigation against Özgür Özel for his criticism of Gürlek.
Özgür Özel is currently facing a total of four investigations linked to Gürlek. The specific charges in the new investigation against Özgür Özel have not been disclosed in the provided article.
The CHP continues to demand the release of those detained in the corruption investigation into the Istanbul Municipality. Among those arrested are Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoglu and Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney.
The party has condemned the latest probe as politically motivated, with Yücel warning that the authorities will not be able to silence the CHP or the thousands of patriotic people. Özgür Özel also stated that the documents of what the previous AKP administration did are with the police and the prosecutor's office.
The rally on Aug. 27 was the 50th demonstration by the CHP demanding the release of those detained in the corruption investigation into the Istanbul Municipality. The CHP remains resolute in its call for transparency and justice in these matters.
