Proposal to Expand European Union-Backed Energy Ventures through More Funded Projects

In the political landscape of Saxony-Anhalt, a significant debate on climate policy has emerged, with the CDU faction's spokeswoman on environmental policy, Sandra Hietel-Heuer, taking a stance against the AfD's proposal to terminate international climate agreements.

Hietel-Heuer, who works under Minister-President Reiner Haseloff, has expressed her concerns that the AfD's plan could weaken the industrial location of Saxony-Anhalt. The AfD is advocating for a break with major agreements such as the Paris Climate Agreement, the European Green Deal, and the federal Climate Protection Act.

However, the CDU's climate policy approach does not align with the AfD's proposal. Hietel-Heuer, along with Haseloff, emphasizes the importance of 'resilience' in achieving climate goals, believing that climate goals must be supplemented by 'resilience' to remain realistic, accepted, and effective.

The CDU's climate policy aims to strengthen competitiveness, while also ensuring that climate protection does not become a burden for companies and consumers. Environmental integrity, according to Hietel-Heuer, is a human right.

The CDU faction is also critical of the blanket ban on internal combustion engines, a policy that the AfD seems to support implicitly. Instead, Hietel-Heuer advocates for technology-open solutions in climate policy.

In a political context, Hietel-Heuer believes that the AfD's proposal to cancel international agreements would be politically nonsensical and economically disastrous. If the AfD's proposal were to be implemented, Germany could isolate itself, potentially endangering jobs within the country.

Despite these criticisms, the CDU faction remains committed to further developing climate policy, recognizing the reality of climate change in Saxony-Anhalt, as evidenced by droughts, floods, and forest fires. As Haseloff prepares to step down in the 2026 state election, the CDU will continue to shape the climate policy discourse in Saxony-Anhalt.
