The Ruhr region, long known for its industrial history, is undergoing a transformation. This was the focus of a recent discussion at the Zeltfestival Ruhr, where Axel Biermann, managing director of Ruhr-Tourismus GmbH, Anita Horn, and Roland Riebeling gathered to share insights.
Axel Biermann acknowledged that not enough investment has been made in roads over the past 20 years. However, he highlighted that the region boasts an excellent road network, where roads are in good condition. He emphasised the need for improvements to increase the region's tourism appeal, focusing on sustainable and flexible mobility options to reduce individual car traffic, expanding public transport connections, and developing digital ride-sharing platforms for commuters.
Improvements in public transport are crucial, with many people expressing criticism about poor road conditions. Biermann's vision includes upgrading the Ruhrtalradweg with separated bike and footpaths, better flood protection, and attractive, barrier-free park entrances with gastronomy and thematic cycling routes to enhance visitor experience and accessibility.
Britta from Witten, a proud resident of the Ruhr region, finds the region's poor image unjustified. She believes that the warmth of the people and the region's natural beauty make it special. Her husband, initially skeptical, was pleasantly surprised by the region's green, hilly, and incredibly beautiful landscapes. Despite this, many people still perceive the Ruhr region primarily as a coal mining area.
The Zeltfestival Ruhr, part of the region's tourism offer, aims to change this perception. It offers a variety of cultural activities, including hand-knitted stuffed animals, crafted jewelry, wine tasting, food from various countries, a small beach for sunbathing, family-friendly theater performances, and evening concerts. Repurposed industrial facilities, such as the gasometer, provide opportunities for new attractions.
Anita Horn, a reporter, finds "a lot is happening" in the Ruhr region, particularly along the Ruhrtalradweg. The region faces unique challenges due to its dense population, but its industrial history remains a unique selling point. The future of the Ruhr region seems to be a blend of preserving its rich past and embracing modern, sustainable tourism.
