Contemplations about the potential draft for women are deemed suitable, according to SPD Caucus Vice-Chair Möller. - Proposal for a work safety directive on shielding employees from ionizing radiation hazards requested from the Commission.

The Editorial Network Germany reports on the current situation regarding conscription and the Bundeswehr's growth targets. The federal cabinet has approved a bill to increase the number of soldiers in the Bundeswehr, with the goal of at least 260,000.

This expansion plan, largely based on volunteering, is being spearheaded by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD). However, the success of this model is being questioned by some, such as Friedrich Merz, the leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Merz suggests that if the new voluntary military service model is not sufficient, there must be a mechanism to return to conscription.

The SPD, including its Deputy Fraktion Leader Möller, believes that reintroducing conscription is not necessary. Möller shares the Minister of Defense's belief that a new, attractive voluntary military service will be successful without conscription. The SPD parliamentary group also holds this view.

Yet, the debate over conscription is far from settled. Merz has announced that introducing compulsory military service for women would require a constitutional amendment. This acknowledges the current Basic Law only allows conscription for men. Merz aims to pursue this legal change despite political resistance, including from the Left party.

The Left Party has announced that it will not support a constitutional amendment for conscription for women. Desiree Becker, the Left Party's defense expert, stated that forcing women to bear arms is "not progress, but a step backwards." The Left Party will fight against conscription for women.

Achieving the two-thirds majority in the Bundestag required for any constitutional amendment regarding conscription is a significant challenge. So far, Merz has not yet specified how he plans to achieve this majority.

The new voluntary military service model is currently being implemented. The success of this model is crucial in determining whether Germany will need to reconsider its stance on conscription in the future. If the growth targets are not met, a return to conscription is possible.

In conclusion, the debate over conscription and the expansion of the Bundeswehr is a complex issue with strong political divisions. The success of the new voluntary military service model will play a significant role in determining Germany's future military policy.
