In the Herford district of Germany, a unique initiative called "Walk to Kindergarten" is making strides in promoting the independence, safety, and environmental awareness of young children. This permanent action, which has been ongoing since 2017 as part of the European Mobility Week, distributes glow warning vests to kindergartens across the district each year.

These vests, adorned with the district's climate protection logo, are designed to make the kindergarten children highly visible, thereby improving road safety. This year, around 1,500 vests will be distributed to all 3-year-olds in the over 130 kindergartens in the Herford district.

Sabine Höner zu Siederdissen, from the Mobility Management of the Herford district, has expressed a positive response to the vest distribution. She encourages creativity in the actions kindergartens take for Mobility Week and is open to advising institutions on further actions during this event.

The distribution of the vests is an annual event in the Herford district. Kindergartens can contact the Mobility Management of the district via email ([email protected]) or phone (05221/13-2290) for more information.

The Herford district aims to encourage kindergarten children and their parents to walk to kindergarten together, even in the dark season. This initiative not only promotes road safety but also supports climate protection in the district.

In addition to the annual vest distribution, the Herford district is organising a children’s competition linked to the European Mobility Week 2025. Children up to 12 years old are invited to participate by creating and submitting drawings depicting the EMW mascot "Edda" planning her birthday party using various transport modes.

The program includes activities like a car-free school day and thematic exhibitions in libraries and bookstores aimed at encouraging environmentally friendly mobility among children and families. While the specific kindergartens conducting activities during the European Mobility Week 2025 are not named in the available search results, any additional institution joining is welcomed.
