Prominent Ukrainian figure, Andriy Parubiy, assassinated in the city of Lviv

In a shocking turn of events, Andriy Parubiy, a prominent Ukrainian politician and former parliamentary speaker, was shot dead in the western city of Lviv on Saturday.

The shooting incident occurred in Lviv's Frankivskyi district, according to local police reports on Telegram. Parubiy was allegedly approached by a 52-year-old local man who confessed to killing him out of personal revenge against the Ukrainian authorities. The suspect's son, who served as a non-commissioned officer in the Ukrainian army, had died in the war.

The suspect claimed he shot Parubiy simply because he was nearby, not as part of a Russian-ordered assassination, despite initial suspicions of Russian involvement. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the killing on a specific date, describing it as a "terrible murder."

Andriy Parubiy played a significant role in Ukrainian politics. He was a key figure in the EuroMaidan Revolution in 2013-2014 and the Orange Revolution in 2004. Parubiy served as Ukraine's parliamentary speaker from 2016 until 2019 and held the position of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council secretary in 2014, during Russia's occupation of the Crimea peninsula.

Parubiy was a proponent of closer ties with the European Union. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko were informed about the circumstances of the murder. Seven shell casings were found at the crime scene.

President Zelenskyy offered his condolences to Parubiy's family and loved ones. All necessary resources have been deployed to find the perpetrator. The incident has sent shockwaves through the political community in Ukraine, with many expressing their grief and condemning the act of violence.
