Prolonged Firefighting Episodes Occur within an Ancient Industrial Structure in Grevenbroich, FW
In the early hours of Tuesday, the fire department of Grevenbroich was called to a commercial building on Schützenplatz, Neukirchen district. The building, approximately 600 square meters, located on Landsberger Straße, was found to be engulfed in flames.
Upon arrival, around 50 firefighters, including full-time personnel and volunteers from neighbouring towns, were deployed to battle the blaze. The fire involved old furniture and paper, and due to the large quantities of old documents stored in the basement, numerous breathing apparatus teams were required to extinguish the fire.
Initially, it was unclear if anyone was inside the vacant building, so teams were dispatched to search for people and fight the fire. Thankfully, no one was injured during the fire. Visibility inside the building was poor due to heavy smoke, making the search slow and painstaking.
The fire department is unable to make any statements regarding the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage. However, the use of foam proved effective in controlling the fire, and at around 8 AM, the incident commander decided to flood the basement with foam to extinguish remaining fires and stop the smoke.
The risk of the fire spreading to neighbouring buildings was quickly contained, allowing evacuated residents from a nearby apartment building to return home after about two hours. All operations were completed by 9:45 AM, and the firefighters returned to their stations.
The fire scene was handed over to the owner and police arson investigators from the Rhein-Kreis Neuss. For further inquiries, contact the Feuerwehr Grevenbroich Press Team at [email protected] or Thomas Kuhn at 01567/8451744.
