Melk Abbey's Renovation: A Comprehensive Restoration Project

Melk Abbey, a symbol of Austria's rich history and culture, is undergoing a significant renovation project. The fourth phase of the renovation of the Abbey Library is currently underway, with the focus for the year 2022 being on this historic library.

The renovation, planned to be completed by 2032, is a meticulous endeavour aimed at ensuring the longevity of this architectural marvel. Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, in her statement, referred to Melk Abbey as a "business card to the world," emphasising its importance in showcasing Austria's heritage.

The project is a collaborative effort, with various entities contributing towards its cost. The Abbey of Melk contributes 47 percent of the funds, while the city of Melk, the support association "Ex Litteris Immortalitas," and Lower Austria each contribute 3 percent, 10 percent, and 25 percent respectively. The federal government contributes 15 percent of the funds, and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research has provided over 100,000 euros in 2024 for the renovation of the monastery library in Melk. The "Ex Litteris Immortalitas" support association has committed to contributing over 100,000 euros by 2024.

The renovation project is extensive, with various aspects being addressed. The facade of the South Bastion is being restored, the garden pavilion is being re-roofed, and work on the Marble Hall's windows is being carried out. Books are being restored and cleaned, ensuring that the vast collection remains in pristine condition.

Abbot Georg Wilfinger emphasised that the Abbey Library continues to be an internationally used centre of knowledge, a place of research and encounter. The renovation is not just about preserving history, but also about maintaining its function as a hub for intellectual pursuits.

The renovation of Melk Abbey is a testament to Austria's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. With over 455,000 visitors last year, the Abbey serves as a beacon attracting tourists from around the world. The completion of this renovation project will ensure that Melk Abbey continues to stand as a symbol of Austria's rich history and cultural significance for many years to come.

President Erwin Hameseder provided information about the support association's contribution, stating that their support is crucial in ensuring the success of this project. The total cost of the renovation is approximately twelve million euros, a testament to the extensive nature of the project.

As the renovation progresses, visitors and locals alike can look forward to a revitalised Melk Abbey, a symbol of Austria's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and promoting intellectual discourse.
