Professor Anja Hesse to retire by the close of 2026
In the heart of Lower Saxony, the city of Brunswick has been witness to a significant transformation in its cultural landscape, thanks to the visionary leadership of Prof. Dr. Anja Hesse.
Born in 1961, Hesse began her career at the Cultural Office of the City of Brunswick in 1992. After a few years, she took over the leadership of the Cultural Office in 1996, and from 2002, she led the Cultural Department. In 2010, she was appointed as the head of the Culture and Science Department, a position she has held for the past decade.
Hesse's influence on Brunswick's cultural life has been profound and unique. She has been at the helm of many groundbreaking initiatives, such as the Light Parcours and the concept of Brunswick's Culture Night. Her focus on remembrance culture has led to numerous memorials and exhibition projects, including the impressive exhibition about the painter and art collector Galka Scheyer in 2022.
Hesse's dedication to the arts extends beyond Brunswick's borders. She has studied art and media science, painting, film history, history, philosophy, and psychology at the University of Fine Arts and the Technical University of Brunswick. In 2022, she was appointed honorary professor by Ostfalia.
In 2023, Hesse requested early retirement, effective at the end of next year. According to the Lower Saxony Civil Service Act, she is eligible for early retirement as she has reached the age of 60. Her retirement application will be decided by the Administrative Committee on September 9.
Throughout her tenure, Hesse has built strong connections with Brunswick's creatives, cultural workers, and the science community. One of her most notable achievements was the initiation of the Municipal Gallery hall 267. Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping Brunswick's cultural identity, and her departure will undoubtedly leave a significant void.
As we look towards the future, we remember the lasting impact Prof. Dr. Anja Hesse has had on Brunswick's cultural scene and express our gratitude for her dedication and vision. Her influence will continue to resonate in the city's cultural life for years to come.
