When Integrity is on the Line, Who Guards the Guardians?
Prioritizing Game Integrity Essential for Poker's Prosperity: Opinion Piece from PokerNews
Last week, poker cheat Ali Imsirovic made a splash at the RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) $1,200 Main Event held at bestbet Jacksonville. Besides being the chip leader at the dinner break, Imsirovic was also the center of attention, as his tournament run was cut short after reports of his removal. His ejection can be traced back to Imsirovic's history of wrongdoings, such as multi-accounting in MTTs and ghosting, but denying other allegations against him (1).
This isn't the first time Imsirovic has fallen under scrutiny, as about two months ago, he was also forced to leave a Day 1 flight of the $1,500 Champions Club Winter Poker Open Main Event in Texas. President of Champions Club, Isaac Trumbo, emphasized the importance of protecting members to ensure poker's continued success, and an unbiased approach to game integrity (2).
👏 | Assuming he was ousted due to his admitted past cheating, kudos to @bestbet_jax expelling him from the @RGPokerSeries event in Florida.
Precedented set at @PokerGOStudio, @ChampionsClubTX followed & so does bestbet.
More venues against bad actors.https://t.co/pEYKQdRad3— Chad Holloway (@ChadAHolloway) May 2, 2025
While Imsirovic exited the property without causing a commotion and with a refund of his entry fee, some question whether he should have been allowed to compete in the tournament in the first place. And if so, why did tournament officials take action only mid-game?
Who Takes the Lead in Ensuring Poker Integrity?
With no industry-wide poker blacklist, it's up to individual tours, venues, and properties to decide who should and shouldn't play. Efforts to streamline this process have been made over the years, with the Poker Integrity Council (PIC) being an example (3). Spearheaded by GGPoker, the council aimed to eradicate poker cheating at its roots, bring together professionals, and create industry-wide consistency in punishments.

Despite having high hopes for the PIC, it appears to have been inactive for the past several years, leaving poker's integrity community divided and uncertain. Some argue that it's time for a revival, while others put their faith in the Tournament Directors' Association (TDA) to set standards and combat cheating.
A Cat and Mouse Game: Balancing Fairness and Profitability
The question remains: who should be allowed to play and under what circumstances? If poker's future depends on maintaining lasting trust and integrity, attempts to address cheating, scams, and other unfair practices are crucial. However, the line between benevolence and hostility is thin, and the time and resources required to truly root out bad actors can feel overwhelming.
I am on the side of the customer.
I am prepared to offer benefit of doubt.
I will be scrupulously fair.
Unless... you are a proven cheat, and then I don't care.
Something unfair happened to a cheat?
The cheat got cheated?
I.
Don't.
Care.
Fuck cheats.
All of 'em.
