Presque Isle Casino secures five-year lifeline with renewed gaming licence
Presque Isle Downs & Casino will remain open for at least another five years after regulators renewed its gaming licence. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) approved the extension, securing the venue's future despite recent financial challenges. Since its launch in 2007, the casino has played a key role in Erie County's economy, bringing in jobs and tourism revenue. The PGCB conducted a detailed review before renewing the Category 1 horse track casino licence. This included financial audits, public hearings, and testimony from both management and local residents. While the board expressed confidence in the casino's ability to continue operating, it attached conditions requiring ongoing oversight.
The casino, owned by Churchill Downs—the company behind the Kentucky Derby—has faced competition from larger rivals like Borgata Atlantic City and other Pennsylvania gaming sites. Despite this, it has generated nearly $2.52 billion in revenue since opening. The venue currently offers 1,525 slot machines and 31 table games, serving as a major employer and tourist attraction in the region.
Earlier warnings from Presque Isle's general manager had suggested potential closure due to financial strain. However, the PGCB's decision now provides stability, allowing the casino to focus on strengthening operations and investing in its future. The board noted that Churchill Downs' financial backing was a key factor in the renewal. The five-year licence renewal ensures Presque Isle Downs & Casino will stay operational, supporting jobs and local economic activity. The PGCB's conditions mean the casino will remain under scrutiny, but the decision removes immediate uncertainty. For Erie County, the move preserves a long-standing gaming and racing hub that has contributed billions in revenue.
