President of the Supreme Court delays Tuesday's meeting with Bolaños following his denouncement of the "personal attack" launched by the Junta towards judges.
In Spain, the Minister of the Presidency, Justice, and Relations with the Courts, Félix Bolaños, has been assuring the public that judges act with independence and separation of powers. However, the Supreme Court currently has 23 vacant positions pending to be filled, and over 80 vacant positions are pending in the top of the Judicial Power, including those in the National Court, superior courts of justice of the autonomous communities, and provincial courts.
The renewal of the CGPJ (General Council of the Judicial Power) has been pending since doubling its five-year term this month due to a lack of agreement between the PSOE and the PP. This delay has caused the postponement of a meeting between Bolaños and the interim President of the Supreme Court, Francisco Marín Castán, which was initially scheduled for this Wednesday. The meeting has now been rescheduled for December 19 at the headquarters of the High Court.
Bolaños has pledged to uphold the prestige of judges and magistrates in the face of any attack. He has defended them from attacks and disqualifications by independence parties and the "long arm of the PP." The Minister has also reiterated that Spain is a state of law with a full democracy.
In a recent incident, Miriam Nogueras, a Junts deputy, called the president of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, Manuel Marchena, and the magistrates Carlos Lesmes, Pablo Llarena, Carmen Lamela, and Concepción Espejel "indecent" in Congress. In response, the President of the CGPJ, Vicente Guilarte, has announced that appropriate measures will be taken to protect the independence of judges from attacks by Junts.
The Minister has assured that judges and magistrates are expected to impart justice with independence, within the framework of the Constitution, the rule of law, and the separation of powers. He has also assured that he will stand by judges and magistrates to defend them from any disqualification and questioning of their prestige.
The Supreme Court has postponed its meeting with Bolaños until next Tuesday, citing "unforeseen reasons" as stated by sources from the tribunal. The Minister has assured that he will continue to work towards ensuring the independence and prestige of the judiciary in Spain.
