Prepare for the Challenge: CompTia Security+ Test isn't a Walk in the Park
In a significant step forward in their IT career, an individual has recently passed the CompTIA Security+ exam. This entry-level cybersecurity certification is widely recognised in the IT and cybersecurity fields, and is particularly valued in the government, military, and private sector cybersecurity roles.
The exam, administered by PearsonVue, consists of a series of questions, with each question having a single right answer, unlike the CASP and CISSP exams. The test is divided into two main sections - a multiple-choice section and a simulation section. The individual found the book "Security+ Exam for Dummies" particularly helpful in preparing for the simulation section of the exam.
The individual reported that they successfully completed 6 out of 7 simulations, with the simulations being said to be more heavily weighted than the multiple-choice section. The simulations covered a range of topics, including setting up firewall rules and configuring RAID.
The Department of Defense has approved the Security+ certification as "Level 2", and it is also an IAT Level 2 certification. This means that the individual now holds a certification that is widely recognised and highly valued, particularly in the context of government contracts and the Washington DC metro area job market.
To further demonstrate the significance of this certification in the marketplace, a job search on Indeed.com that requires the Security+ certification results in dozens of positions with a salary range of more than $100,000 in the Washington DC metro area alone. Searching "IAT2" on Indeed.com will show all of the jobs that require or prefer an IAT Level 2 certification like Security+.
This was the individual's first step in their certification path. They skipped over the IT Fundamentals, A+, and Network+ exams before taking the Security+ exam, making it their initial venture into the world of cybersecurity certifications.
With this new certification under their belt, the individual is well-positioned to pursue a successful career in the ever-growing field of cybersecurity.
