Preparation for War: Discussion by Ukrainian MP on "West-2025" Military Drills

In recent news, the upcoming "Zapad-2025" military exercises have been causing alarm among military experts and politicians. The exercises, involving Russia and Belarus, are raising concerns due to their potential objectives and the historical context of the regions involved.

Oleg Dunde, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, has questioned the real objectives of the Kremlin and the Lukashenko regime during these exercises. The past actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, such as his public statement in 2014 that he would "protect" the civilian population of Crimea, have been recalled.

The Kremlin and Lukashenko's government aim to demonstrate military strength, show off a threatening posture, increase Western uncertainty, and divert attention from the war in Ukraine. They also use the exercises to prepare and showcase their military capabilities, though the exercise is not perceived as an acute threat to NATO. Belarus, in particular, uses the exercises to showcase its military capabilities alongside Russia.

The Suwałki Corridor, often referred to as the "Achilles' heel" of the Alliance, has been mentioned as a potential target for military provocations. The wooded and marshy terrain, with poor road infrastructure, makes it an unfavorable target for military occupation due to the lack of cover, making forces extremely vulnerable to air strikes. However, more likely targets for military provocations are populated areas near the borders of Belarus and Russia, such as Narva, Daugavpils, and Vilnius.

There have been claims that Lithuania, Latvia, and Finland are preparing for an attack on Russia, which some view as preparation for a potential war. Dmitry Medvedev's statements have been considered a direct threat to the European part of NATO.

As the likelihood of the Suwałki Corridor becoming the target of a military provocation is being assessed, it is important to remain vigilant and support efforts to maintain peace and security in the region. In this complex geopolitical landscape, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritise diplomacy and dialogue over military action, to ensure the safety and security of all nations and their citizens.
