A forest fire breaks out in a military training area close to Lübtheen. - Power cable malfunction potentially ignites blaze?
In the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, a fire broke out near Lübtheen on a Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters were still working to control a three-hectare blaze the following morning, but there was no longer any danger for local residents.
The area is hard to reach, so initially, they were using a water ring to prevent the fire from spreading. Uwe Pulss, the district fire chief, reported that the fire had earlier encompassed ten hectares of land between Jessenitz-Werk and Jessenitz, which was tainted by old ammunition.
The reason for the fire is suspected to be a snapped power cable. The dry forest floor, coupled with wind, enabled sparks to cause the blaze. To ensure safety, the energy supplier shut off the power on Wednesday. 140 firefighters and a helicopter joined the efforts to extinguish the fire.
The fire didn't expand because it was windy, with favorable wind direction and it was surrounded and extinguished from a secure area.
The former military site near Lübtheen has large amounts of ammunition contamination. Over the years, there have been several destructive forest fires in the area.
Famously, in the summer of 2019, old munitions, likely self-ignited, sparked a fire that spread to nearly 1,000 hectares of forest. This was the most extensive forest fire in the country's history.

Around June 2020, 100 hectares of land caught fire. At that time, many residents had to leave their homes to protect themselves from the flames. The fire was just 800 meters away from their houses as well.
