Potential Use of Ex-Jersey Airlines Aircraft for Non-Profit or Charitable Purposes
The iconic 'Duchess of Brittany', a piece of Jersey's aviation history, is set to have a sustainable future. Plans are currently in the works to ensure this unique aircraft, which was once a staple of Jersey Airlines, continues to be accessible to the public.
Matt Palmer, who has been caring for the Duchess since saving it from the scrapheap several years ago, has been seeking a suitable long-term strategy to protect this truly unique aircraft. With the help of a small team, he is working to establish a not-for-profit organisation or charity to take over ownership of the De Havilland Heron.
The goal of this organisation is to access funding and develop plans for a sustainable future for the De Havilland Heron. The group includes aviation historians, former De Havilland employees, and representatives from heritage organisations, all working together to secure the future of this community heritage project.
The 'Duchess of Brittany' was originally brought back to Jersey in 2018, following a campaign that included the late Peter 'Willy' Weber, a former Jersey Airlines pilot and aviation enthusiast. Since then, it has been sitting in a secure area near the air traffic control tower, owned by Matt Palmer.
The Duchess used to fly between the Channel Islands, the UK, and continental Europe. After the company that previously owned it went into liquidation, Matt Palmer bought the plane for just £1. Since then, he has been dedicated to preserving this piece of Jersey's aviation history.
Ports of Jersey allowed the Duchess to be moved from its initial home on a section of open tarmac to a more suitable location, ensuring its continued protection. As Matt Palmer emphasised, he will still be involved in the project, but recognises the need for the right structure to ensure its long-term success.
With the establishment of this not-for-profit organisation or charity, the Duchess of Brittany is one step closer to a sustainable future, where it can continue to be admired by generations to come.
