The city of Fort Lauderdale is preparing for a significant modernization of its water infrastructure, with the upgrade of its water treatment system set to begin on Monday. This critical step aims to improve the quality of water services provided to homes and businesses in the city.

The upgrade, taking place in Broward County, includes the construction of the Prospect Wellfield and the Prospect Lake Clean Water Center. The new facilities are expected to be completed in fall 2026, according to city officials.

During the upgrade process, the city's existing treatment plant will lose access to certain wells and will draw from sources with "naturally higher organic content." As a result, the drinking water in Fort Lauderdale may temporarily change color, with a brownish tint expected starting from Monday. However, officials assure that this change will not affect the water's safety or drinkability.

The temporary color difference in the tap water is due to the planned flushing of raw water piping to remove sand, grit, and other debris. The water's appearance will improve once the new Prospect Lake Clean Water Center is operational.

Sergio Candido, the managing editor for the South region at the specified website, is overseeing multiplatform news coverage for Miami, Texas, and Atlanta. Before joining the current website, Candido worked for outlets including Telemundo and The Miami Herald. He emphasized the importance of this upgrade for Fort Lauderdale's water infrastructure.

The city did not specify the exact color the water might take during this process. Residents are advised to continue using their tap water as usual, as the change is temporary and does not pose any health risks.

The upgrade of Fort Lauderdale's water treatment system is a crucial step towards ensuring a reliable and high-quality water supply for the city's growing population. The improvements are expected to result in a significant boost in the quality of service to homes and businesses.
