Portugal's municipal elections reshape local power across key districts
The latest municipal elections in Portugal have reshaped local leadership across several districts. Results show shifts in power, with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Socialist Party (PS) securing key victories in different regions.
In Aveiro, PSD dominated by winning 12 of the 19 chambers, while PS maintained a strong second place with three absolute majorities. Meanwhile, Beja saw PS take nine chambers, though with a slight decline from 2021.
In Aveiro, PSD emerged as the clear winner, securing 12 municipal chambers—three more than in the previous elections. The party's success marked a significant gain in the region. PS followed as the second most voted party, capturing three chambers with absolute majorities and 27.69% of the vote. The CDS-PP also made gains, becoming the third most voted party with three municipalities and 6.74% of the vote. Additionally, one chamber remained under the control of an independent citizens' group, holding an absolute majority.
In **Braga**, PSD strengthened its position by winning four chambers alone, four in coalition with CDS-PP, and one in a three-party alliance with CDS-PP and PPM. The PS, however, saw a decline, securing only three chambers—two fewer than in 2021. The **Beja** district saw PS retain dominance with nine chamber victories, though one fewer than in the last elections. The party achieved absolute majorities in eight of those nine municipalities. CDU (PCP/PEV) came second, winning three chambers with 27.52% of the vote. PSD also made inroads, leading one municipality alone and another in coalition with CDS-PP and the Liberal Initiative. In **Bragança**, PSD took control of seven of the 12 municipal chambers, two of which were won in coalition with CDS-PP. Despite this, PS remained the second most voted party in the district, securing five chamber presidencies and 41.71% of the vote.
The election results confirm PSD's growing influence in northern and central districts, while PS maintains strongholds in southern regions. The shifts in chamber control reflect changing voter preferences, with coalitions playing a key role in several victories. Independent citizens' groups also retained a presence in at least one municipality in Aveiro.
