Porsche Unveils Wireless Charging Cayenne EV at Munich Auto Show

Porsche is set to make a significant leap in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the unveiling of the first production car to use inductive floor pad wireless charging for its high-voltage battery: the fully electric Cayenne. The announcement was made ahead of this year's Munich Auto Show.

The Cayenne EV will be priced above £100,000 (A$206,100) when sales begin, marking a new milestone for the luxury automaker. This electric SUV will offer a range of design changes, including integrated high-mounted headlights, a re-sculpted light bar at the rear, and frameless windows.

The wireless charging kit included with the Cayenne EV is equipped with safety systems that halt charging if a foreign object or living creature is detected on the surface. Owners connect the charging plate to mains power and park the Cayenne EV over the pad, ensuring it aligns between the wheels. The wireless setup delivers 11kW of charging power, suitable for overnight replenishment of the Cayenne's large battery.

The Cayenne EV can lower itself closer to the charging plate to maintain efficiency. In addition to the wireless charging capability, the EV is also compatible with 400kW rapid charging, allowing a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in around 15 minutes.

The electric Cayenne will coexist with petrol-powered models, expanding the brand's SUV line-up. Power outputs for the Cayenne EV are expected to start around 400bhp, with Turbo models approaching 800-900bhp (596kW-671kW). Coupe and SUV body styles will be offered for the electric Cayenne.

The interior cabin moves to a largely digital interface with multiple displays. The EV shares Porsche's 800-volt PPE platform with the Macan Electric but introduces updates such as Active Ride Control, rear-wheel steering, and enhanced air suspension. Base "4" models and high-output "Turbo" versions will be available at launch.

The wireless charging plate for home use measures 117cm by 78cm and stands six centimetres high. Porsche will be the first to put inductive wireless charging for high-voltage batteries on sale for the Porsche Cayenne EV.

The increased passenger space in the electric Cayenne is due to a flat floor, providing a more comfortable ride for all occupants. Porsche continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the EV market, making electric mobility an exciting and attractive option for luxury car enthusiasts.
