"Popkov admitted to the murder of two additional females in Angaria"
In the small town of Angarsk, on the Moscow highway, a chilling event unfolded in August 2008. Mikhail Popkov, known as the "Angarsk Maniac," encountered two women, leading to a quarrel that would have dire consequences.
The investigation into the incident was initially suspended due to an unidentified perpetrator. However, years later, in 2025, the case was reopened. The key factor in reopening the case was the similarity in the criminal's handwriting, which was matched to that of Mikhail Popkov.
Popkov, who was already serving a life sentence in a strict-regime correctional colony in Mordovia, had confessed to killing over 80 people. His first confession came after his sentencing in 2015, where he was found guilty of killing 22 women.
In 2023, a verdict was passed on several more episodes, making it his fourth trial. Yet, no court proceedings have yet taken place for his new confessions, which detail additional murders committed between 2008 and 2023.
The preliminary investigation of the case did not provide details about the identities of the two women. What is known is that Popkov strangled both women one after the other in August 2008.
The first criminal trial against Mikhail Popkov was held in 2015, where he was charged with murder of two or more persons as outlined in part "a" of article 105, section 2 of the Russian Criminal Code.
Despite these new developments, no further information was provided about the reopening of the case or any potential developments. Popkov's crimes, which span from 1992 to 2010, continue to haunt the communities he affected.
As the investigation continues, the people of Angarsk and the Irkutsk region await closure and justice for the victims of this tragic series of events.
