Politicians from DPP and LDP hold talks on enhancing undersea cable safety measures

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held an expanded round of talks yesterday at the DPP's headquarters in Taipei. The discussions focused on undersea cable maintenance, security, coast guard operations, and disaster prevention.

The meetings, which initially started in 2021, have been expanded to include four participants from each side, up from two each. The talks were led by DPP Legislator Kuo Kuo-wen, who also stated that the discussions took place at the DPP's headquarters in Taipei.

Lawmakers from both parties attended the talks, including LDP representatives Tsuyoshi Hoshino, Kazuchika Iwata, Takashi Yamashita, and Eikei Suzuki, all members of the Japanese House of Representatives. From the DPP side, Kuo Kuo-wen was joined by Chen Kuan-ting, Lee Kuen-cheng, and Wang Cheng-hsu.

The discussions were primarily centred around undersea cable maintenance, with a potential new information-sharing mechanism being a point of interest. This interest arises from the recent damage to three international undersea cables serving Taiwan. The Ministry of Digital Affairs is still investigating the cause of the damage, and has not ruled out intentional acts.

In addition to undersea cable maintenance, the talks covered a range of other issues. These included policy discussions and cooperation between the ruling parties from both nations, as well as measures to strengthen security and improve disaster prevention.

Japan's advanced technology and expertise in undersea cable maintenance make it an ideal partner for Taiwan in safeguarding its undersea cables. The meetings between the DPP and LDP aim to facilitate these collaborations, fostering a stronger relationship between the two nations.

However, no agreement or decision was mentioned regarding the establishment of the information-sharing mechanism for undersea cable maintenance. The name of the Japanese delegate who participated in the talks on cooperation regarding the security of underwater cables and other topics is also not mentioned in the provided search results.
