Transfer News: RB Leipzig Shake Up Squad Ahead of New Season

In a flurry of activity on deadline day, German football club RB Leipzig announced several significant transfers and loan moves.

Firstly, Danish international Conrad Harder joined the club from Sporting Lisbon. Standing at 1.85 meters tall, Harder brings international experience to RB Leipzig after a successful debut season with the Danish national team in March. Harder, a center forward, scored 11 goals and set up 7 more in all competitions in Portugal last season. He had previously been trained at Danish first division club FC Nordsjælland.

Marcel Schäfer, sporting director of RB Leipzig, stated that Harder fits perfectly into their profile. Harder has signed a contract with RB Leipzig until 2030.

In another transfer, Lois Openda's move to Juventus Turin was announced late in the evening. Openda, who joined Leipzig from RC Lens two years ago for a transfer fee of 40 million euros, will initially be on loan with a purchase obligation. After a strong debut season with 28 goals, Openda scored only 13 goals in all competitions last season. The total transfer fee for Openda is significantly over 40 million euros.

Meanwhile, Eljif Elmas is returning to SSC Napoli from RB Leipzig. Elmas had joined Leipzig from Napoli in January 2024 but failed to make an impact in the 22 games he played.

On the loan front, Lutsharel Geertruida is leaving Leipzig and joining AFC Sunderland. Geertruida, who joined Leipzig last summer, is under contract with RB until 30 June 2029.

The departure of Geertruida leaves a void in the Leipzig squad, but the club is confident that the arrival of Conrad Harder, along with other potential signings, will strengthen their team ahead of the new season.
