Political figure Imran Khan has appointed Mahmood Achakzai as the opposition leader in the National Assembly (NA).

In a significant turn of events, several lawmakers from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have faced consequences due to their disqualifications.

The most notable change is the removal of Omar Ayub Khan from his position as opposition leader in the National Assembly. His disqualification, following a conviction by an anti-terrorism court in the May 9 cases, has led to a vacancy in the role. To fill this vacancy, the PTI has nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Imran Khan has also nominated Azam Swati for the opposition leader in the Senate.

The National Assembly Secretariat has formally notified Omar Ayub's removal, and he has also been stripped of all standing committees, including the Public Accounts Committee. His disqualification has also resulted in the loss of his chairmanship of the Standing Committee on Railways.

Sahibzada Hamid Raza, who was the chairman of the Standing Committee on Human Rights, has also had his chairmanship terminated as a result of the disqualifications. Zartaj Gul, a fellow PTI member, has lost her membership of the same committee.

In response to these developments, PTI senior leader Salman Akram Raja has announced that consultations regarding by-elections will be held at a high-level party meeting. A decision regarding these by-elections is expected to be taken at the political committee meeting.

Both Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz, who have been disqualified, have approached the Peshawar High Court against their disqualifications.

These changes mark a significant shift in the political landscape of Pakistan's National Assembly, with several key positions now vacant and awaiting new appointments.
