In the quiet town of Lübeck, Germany, two separate incidents of straw bale fires occurred over the weekend of August 23-24, 2025. On Friday night, a fire was reported near Weißenhaus, and another fire was reported on Sunday evening in the same town.

Approximately 200 straw bales were burned in each fire, but thanks to the swift action of the fire brigade and THW, the fires were contained and prevented from spreading to adjacent tree stands and nearby fields. The fires were reported to the Police Directorate Lübeck, and road closures were in effect in the area until around 15:00 on Friday and Sunday.

The investigation into the cause of the fires is currently ongoing, and the criminal police in Oldenburg are leading the investigation on suspicion of arson. The investigation is being conducted separately from the police in Lübeck, and witnesses who have seen suspicious persons or vehicles near the fires are asked to contact the police.

At this time, there is no publicly available information naming any individuals suspected of arson related to the straw bale fires in the community of Wangels. The Police Directorate Lübeck Press Office can be contacted for further questions, and their contact details are: Telephone: 0451-131-2015, Fax: 0451-131-2019, Email: [email protected]. Alternatively, reports can be made to [email protected] or by calling 04361 10550.

The second fire occurred in a stack with an area of approximately 5 x 22 m, and the fire brigade and THW ensured controlled burning of the second stack. No further details about the investigation have been released at this time.

The community of Lübeck is urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working diligently to determine the cause of the fires and to bring those responsible to justice.
