Straw Bale Fires in Wangels Under Investigation for Suspected Arson

Two straw bale fires, reported on the weekend of August 23-24, 2025, in the municipality of Wangels, are currently under investigation by the criminal police in Oldenburg, following suspicions of arson.

The first fire was reported around 1:15 AM on Friday night and was swiftly attended to by the fire department and THW to ensure controlled burning. Approximately 200 straw bales were burned in this incident, and the fire department managed to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent trees.

Later on Sunday evening, another fire was reported at around 10 PM. The second fire involved a larger stack of straw bales, with an area of approximately 5 x 22 m. Once again, the fire department and THW ensured controlled burning to prevent further damage.

Road closures were in effect in the area until approximately 3 PM on Saturday. The investigation into the cause of these fires is ongoing, with the results not yet made public.

Anna Julia Meyer, the press spokesperson for the Lübeck Police Directorate, has asked witnesses who have seen suspicious persons or vehicles near the fire sites to contact the police at 04361 10550 or by email at [email protected]. For inquiries regarding the investigation, the Lübeck Police Directorate is the appropriate contact.

While the head of the criminal police conducting the investigation into possible arson at the Heuscheiben in Wangels is not explicitly named in the search results, Arne Schmidt is set to lead the Police Inspection Oldenburg-Stadt/Ammerland as of autumn 2025, which includes Oldenburg, and thus may be the responsible official for such investigations in the area.
