Police driver under the influence causes accident, injuring police officer in collision
In the eastern Styrian district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld, a dramatic incident unfolded during routine investigations into a car accident involving wildlife on the L401 in Geiselsdorf bei Hartberg.
Around 8:20 PM, a 31-year-old individual, under the influence of alcohol, rammed a stationary police car. The police vehicle's hazard lights were on, and the officers were wearing reflective vests, yet the driver claimed he didn't notice the accident and didn't know where the problem was.
The incident caused severe damage to both police vehicles. As a result, a 29-year-old policewoman was injured when her knee was hit by a rammed police car door. She was taken to the LKH Hartberg hospital and was later released into home care.
The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended by another police unit. A breathalyzer test showed approximately 2 promille of alcohol in his system.
The fleeing vehicle headed towards Hartberg, but the exact location of the suspect's arrest is not specified in the provided search results.
The police officer's colleague initiated a radio search for the fleeing vehicle, and another police patrol on the L401 heading towards Graz was able to stop the driver.
Despite the incident occurring during nighttime, the police vehicles' hazard lights and the officers' reflective vests were visible, suggesting that the driver's intoxication may have been the primary cause of the accident.
The suspect remains at large, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of road safety.
