Police department releases video footage from body cameras of the August 15th case involving an individual's death while in custody
In the wake of a tragic incident, the Alexandria Police Department (APD) and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office are conducting thorough investigations into the in-custody death of Allan Tucker II on August 15.
According to reports, Tucker was arrested for public intoxication and transported to the Alexandria Jail. However, approximately 40 minutes after arriving at the sally port, he was found unresponsive in the back seat of the cruiser. Despite the efforts of officers and medical personnel, Tucker could not be resuscitated.
The Office of the Independent Police Auditor, the Northern Virginia Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), APD's Office of Professional Responsibility, and the city's Office of the Independent Police Auditor are all involved in the investigations. The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is also conducting an internal review of its staff's actions.
The body worn camera footage from one of the officers involved in the incident has been released by the APD. The footage shows Tucker refusing to go back into his home and being handcuffed.
The identities of the two officers directly involved in the incident have not been disclosed publicly. However, it is known that they have been temporarily removed from patrol duties to support the investigations and are currently on administrative duties at police headquarters.
Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire has asked the community to pray for Tucker's family and the officers involved in his detainment. McGuire also mentioned that there would be corrective actions within the department but did not comment directly on the potential disciplining of the officers involved.
In a show of solidarity, a GoFundMe launched by Tucker's family has raised over $4,000 for legal costs.
The Office of the Medical Examiner is yet to determine the official cause of Tucker's death. The Independent Community Policing Review Board will hold a public hearing on the auditor's investigation and issue its report to City Council.
Tucker's only companion in his apartment was his father. During the incident, no use of force was reported by officers. Officers called for medical support and administered NARCAN to Tucker, believing he might have been experiencing an overdose.
Sheriff's Office deputies and contract medical staff responded immediately to provide assistance once notified of the medical emergency. McGuire has urged everyone to await the results of the investigations before jumping to conclusions.
This is a developing story and more information will be released as it becomes available.
