In a shocking turn of events, Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader, found himself on the losing end of the 2025 federal election in his own riding, Carleton, to liberal rival Bruce Fanjoy. Poilievre's supporters were left puzzled about the unexpected turn of events, as the Conservative leader had been comfortable in the riding since 2004.

"I'm absolutely heartbroken," said Norma, an 80-year-old resident of Carleton, tears streaming down her face in the grocery store parking lot. "This whole town is liberal! What's wrong with people? Pierre had such big rallies. I don't understand what happened."

The final tally came in early Tuesday morning after a long night of vote counting: over 4,000 votes divided the Conservative leader and his Liberal opponent, with Fanjoy securing nearly 51% of the vote.

Fanjoy attributes his victory to a combination of factors: a charismatic national campaign, local grassroots efforts, and addressing voters' concerns, particularly those related to U.S. President Trump.

"Pierre Poilievre took Carleton for granted for too long," Fanjoy explained. "No one enjoys being taken for granted, and it cost him dearly in the end."

The Conservative Party sent reinforcements during the final week of the election campaign, as Carleton started slipping away. Poilievre crisscrossed the country, rallying voters and insisting on change. However, the campaign seemed to come too late, as hundreds, if not thousands, attended the last rally without it translating into the ballot box.

Poilievre's controversial positionsβ€”such as his anti-vaccination campaign and support for the truckers who blocked downtown Ottawaβ€”did not help his cause. Also, the memory of past Conservative government cuts to the federal public service remained fresh in voters' minds, particularly public servants like Michel Shamoko, who felt the impact directly.

"We've had bad experiences with the Conservatives in power before," said Shamoko. "Pierre Poilievre didn't help with his perceived proximity to Donald Trump."

The riding of Carleton has 18.3% public servants, according to 2012 census data from Statistics Canada.

Pierre Poilievre, despite trailing for most of the night, indicated he planned to stay in office and fight for the conservative values his supporters voted for. However, to remain at the head of his party, he will need the support of his caucus and win a by-election to become the official opposition leader.

Despite the loss, Poilievre's Quebec lieutenant, Pierre Paul-Hus, and other high-ranking Conservatives like Andrew Scheer and Gerard Deltell, continue to support him.

"We will arrive in Ottawa at the House of Commons with a very different dynamic," said Paul-Hus. "We'll be in a position almost equal to the government."
