Poet Laureate of Worcester, Oliver de la Paz, Shares His Work in Reading Session

The Holy Cross College Working Writers Series, a platform that offers insights into a writer's work and provides direct interactions with authors, has been a cultural highlight this academic year.

The series kicked off on September 18 in Rehm Library, welcoming Professors Leah Hager Cohen and Oliver de la Paz as its first guests. Since then, the series has hosted five speakers, including special guest Adrian Matejka, who gave a poetry reading on November 11, 2021.

On February 2nd, the Prior Performing Arts Center played host to authors Xu Xi and Leila Philip. The duo read excerpts from their respective books, Monkey in Residence and Beaverland, as part of the Working Writers Series. The English department also took this opportunity to promote the English major and creative writing.

Oliver de la Paz, a professor at Holy Cross College, was another notable guest. During his poetry reading, he orated eight poems, six of which were from his most recent work. He provided background information and inspiration behind each poem, making the event an engaging and educational experience.

De la Paz's latest book, The Diaspora Sonnets, was long-listed for the National Book Award and won the New England Book Award for Poetry in 2023. He is also the author and editor of seven books and teaches classes such as Poetry and Poetics and Introduction to Creative Writing.

In addition to these esteemed authors, the Working Writers Series has previously welcomed writers such as J.D Scrimgeour, W. Ralph Eubanks, and Francisco Cantรบ. The series is open to anyone, regardless of major, making it an accessible and inclusive event for the entire college community.

As for the future of the Working Writers Series, there are currently no search results providing information about which author will appear as a guest reader at the series in fall 2022. However, with the success of the series so far, anticipation is high for the upcoming events.

The Working Writers Series continues to provide opportunities for individuals to learn more about a writer's work and hear from them directly, fostering a love for literature and creative writing at Holy Cross College.
