Players express solidarity with Mumbru in basketball community
In the heart of EuroBasket, the German national basketball team is facing a unique challenge. Their head coach, Alex Mumbru, has been battling a medical condition, but the team remains united and focused on their mission.
Mumbru, who took over the national team last year, had to miss the preliminary round due to a pancreatic inflammation. He was hospitalized in Tampere, Finland, for immediate treatment. However, he returned to the sidelines during the round of 16 against Portugal, visibly weakened and losing several kilograms.
Despite his condition not being at 100%, Mumbru has been leading the team, albeit with the support of assistant coach Alan Ibrahimagic. Mumbru's appearance on the sidelines against Portugal was his first at this EuroBasket.
Ibrahimagic took over coaching duties during the games, but Mumbru has been making the strategic decisions. This unique arrangement was evident in the team's victory against Portugal, which was dedicated to Mumbru.
Captain Schroder praised Mumbru's mentality, stating that he is a "warrior." Ibrahimagic also showed great respect for Mumbru's decision to continue coaching despite his health challenges. Maodo Lo, on behalf of the team, expressed support for Alex Mumbru.
The team's next challenge comes on Wednesday, as Germany faces Slovenia, led by Luka Doncic, in the quarterfinal. The game will be broadcast on RTL and MagentaSport at 8:00 PM. Mumbru wants the focus to be on this crucial game, not his personal situation.
Mumbru has made adjustments to the team's playing style this summer, aiming for faster and more aggressive play. If successful, this could be the key to overcoming Slovenia and advancing further in the tournament.
The World Cup is scheduled for 2027 in Qatar, with the next mandatory game in the World Cup qualifiers taking place in November. Mumbru is expected to resume his role as head coach by this time, ready to lead the team towards their next major tournament.
Through thick and thin, the German basketball team has shown resilience and unity. They are rallying around their ailing coach, determined to make Mumbru's leadership count in the upcoming quarterfinal against Slovenia.
