Plans for the newest iteration of the Weser Bridge unveiled

The A1 Weser Bridge in Bremen, one of the major traffic arteries in Northern Germany, is undergoing a significant renovation. The existing bridge has been strengthened for approximately two years, with repair work to restore its original load-bearing capacity starting in May 2024.

The client for this project is Jörn Kück from DEGES Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH. The non-public competition for the reconstruction of the Weser Bridge, conducted according to the guidelines for planning competitions in road and civil engineering of the BMDV (RPW 2013), saw five engineering firms competing. The bidder consortium WTM Engineers GmbH / COWI emerged as the winner.

A new bike bridge will be built parallel to the new Weser crossing during the reconstruction, creating a direct connection across the Weser. This modern, safe, and comfortable bike bridge will facilitate both daily and recreational traffic.

The continuous weaving lanes between the junctions Bremen-Arsten and Bremen-Hemelingen have been closed since August 2023 to relieve the aging structure. The reconstruction of the Weser Bridge will improve the performance of the highway, ensuring smooth traffic flow for years to come.

On September 18, 2025, at 12:30 p.m., a specialist discussion about the reconstruction of the Weser Bridge will take place. The participants involved in this event are Jörn Kück from DEGES Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH (client), a representative from the bidder consortium WTM Engineers GmbH / COWI (competition winner), Prof. Dr. Iris Reuther, Senate Building Director, and Gunnar Polzin, Head of the Traffic Department at the Senator for Construction, Mobility, and Urban Development.

The results of the competition will be displayed from September 19th in the foyer of the building department in Bremen. Admission to the exhibition is free, allowing the public to learn more about the plans for the Weser Bridge's reconstruction.

It's important to note that the actual implementation of the project will not begin until at least 2031. However, this preparatory work lays the groundwork for a more efficient and sustainable A1 Weser Bridge in the future.
