Planned excavation slated for August 21st amidst bombing suspicions at the intersection

In the historic city of Lünen, Germany, a surprising discovery was made on August 20, 2025. A suspected World War II unexploded bomb was found on the former sports field at Kreuzstraße. The Westphalia-Lippe Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) has been called in to handle the situation.

On August 21, 2025, the EOD will conduct the uncovering, defusing, and removal of the suspected bomb. The city urges visitors to avoid the area on this day as safety measures, including a possible evacuation within a radius of up to 250 meters around the find spot, may be required.

The exact location of the evacuation radius will be determined after the uncovering of the suspected bomb. In case of a necessary evacuation, it is recommended not to use the area within the evacuation radius. The Ludwig-Uhland-Realschule, Preußenstraße 162, has been designated as a gathering point during an evacuation.

If the bomb is confirmed, loudspeaker announcements are possible on the day of the measure. More precise information about the duration and scope of the measures will only be available after the uncovering.

Residents are advised to prepare medication and necessary supplies for pets. If the bomb is confirmed, extensive safety measures may be necessary, and the city encourages residents to check accommodation options with relatives, friends, or acquaintances outside the restricted area.

The city of Lünen will continuously inform about the current status on its homepage www.unser website and via municipal social media channels. For questions, the local authority of the city of Lünen can be reached on telephone 02306 1672 on weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm.

It is important to note that the discovery of the suspected bomb does not currently pose any immediate threat to the public. The detonator of one of the discovered bombs was blown up, but no evacuation was necessary. The EOD has already completed the inspection of two suspected unexploded ordnance points.

The city of Lünen and the EOD remind everyone to stay calm and follow instructions during this time. Safety is the top priority, and the city will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
