Persisting Medieval Generosity Transforming Modern Lives Today

On the 16th of November, 2025, the historic Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction will take place, marking its 165th edition and the 600th anniversary of the Hôtel-Dieu, the medieval hospital where the event is held.

The Hôtel-Dieu, founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, originally served as a refuge for the sick and poor. Today, it stands as a museum and a prestigious venue for the auction, attracting wine enthusiasts and collectors from around the world.

The 2025 auction will be a special one, as it will feature the first fully organic vintage under the management of Ludivine Griveau. Griveau, who was appointed estate manager and winemaker of the Hospices in 2015, made history by becoming the first woman to hold these positions in nearly six centuries. Under her leadership, the vineyard management has been modernized with sustainable practices, and the cellar work has been pushed towards precision, leading to the long conversion to organic certification.

One of the highlights of the 2025 auction will be a new cuvee: Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Cuveé François Faiveley, donated by Domaine Faiveley to celebrate their 200th anniversary. The auction will feature three barrels of this exclusive wine.

The method of the auction involves offering each lot of wine by candlelight, and bidding ends when the flame goes out. In 1945, a single barrel of Meursault-Charmes sold for the equivalent of €2 million, showcasing the potential value of the wines up for auction.

The 2025 auction is anticipated to raise funds for a child's cancer treatment, and it is expected to have significant volumes due to the stabilization of the Burgundy market. The 2019 and 2022 vintages have been praised for their finesse and balance, making the 2025 auction an attractive opportunity for collectors.

Moreover, the 2025 auction will celebrate the 20th anniversary of France's Disability Act. The Pièce des Présidents will support cutting-edge disability technology in this special occasion.

The 2025 Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction promises to be a memorable event, filled with history, tradition, and innovation. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, this auction is an event not to be missed.
