In the world of fashion, the past often meets the present in the most unexpected ways. This season, torque necklaces, also known as 'torcs', are making a comeback, offering a fresh appeal in these difficult times.

Originating from ancient Celtic cultures dating back to the Iron Age, torques were traditionally worn by warriors and people of high status. These large, rigid neck rings, often made from gold, were believed to bring good luck during conflict. Today, designers are giving these traditional necklaces a modern twist, creating pieces that feel refreshingly new.

One such designer is Laura Vann, who has been inspired by torques for her latest collection. Vann's designs feature an articulated setting, intricate channel-set baguettes, a slim sterling silver wire, and a distinctive hook fastening. Her modern take on the torque necklace is a testament to timeless craftsmanship combined with sculptural modernity.

Another designer making waves is Jessica McCormack. Her torque necklace, part of her "Day Diamonds" concept, is designed to be wearable, comfortable, and elevated. In her latest collection, McCormack has incorporated an incredible oval diamond as a statement centerpiece. McCormack has previously collaborated with the Haas Brothers and has engagement rings featured in her London store's bridal space.

McCormack's torque necklace was modeled by Zoë Kravitz in the brand's campaign, adding a contemporary edge to the ancient design. Gucci and Acne are also jumping on the torque bandwagon, with Gucci featuring chunky gold collars inspired by the brand's bamboo bag handles, and Acne offering silver torque-inspired chokers with crab claw pendants.

Pomellato's 'Together' choker and Nada Ghazal's modernist take on the torque necklace, adorned with champagne diamonds, are other examples of how designers are reimagining this ancient piece of jewellery.

In ancient art depicting Celtic mythology, gods and goddesses are often shown wearing torque necklaces. Today, these necklaces are not just symbols of status and good luck, but also a fashionable way to add a touch of history to one's wardrobe.
